DIABETES
IS A CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE,
often associated with obesity,
high
blood pressure and high cholesterol.
80% of all diabetic mortality is from cardiovascular disease.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) often develops before the onset of
clinical diabetes.
More than half of first heart attacks are fatal and half of these
occur in persons not previously known to have CHD.
Secondary prevention is cost effective only for those who survive
their first events.
Cardiac patients who have had a heart
attack, stroke,
by-pass
surgery, angioplasty,
or stent
procedure should get
aggressive management of their diabetes, high blood pressure
and cholesterol problems to prevent future events.
DIABETES IS A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC.
Metabolic syndrome is an obligatory precursor to Type 2 diabetes,
and with or without progression to Type 2 diabetes, it is a major
atherogenic factor.
Treatment strategies should depend on global risk assessment
rather than on numerical values of individual risk factors.
We should avoid tunnel vision and adopt global risk reduction
by intensified intervention of multiple risk factors to prevent
cardiovascular disease in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
