Diabetes’ Big Picture

This is in reference to the Jan. 20 front-page report “Diabetes patients
urged to get leg checkups” on diabetes and peripheral artery disease.
Diabetes is a cardiovascular disease, often associated with obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol abnormalities. Diabetes is not just a blood sugar disease anymore. Clustering of cardiovascular risk factors and risk markers ultimately leads to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), causing heart attack, stroke and leg amputation.

Diabetes is only part of the big picture. Eighty percent of all diabetic mortality is from cardiovascular disease. People who have had a heart attack, stroke, bypass surgery, angioplasty or a stent procedure should get aggressive management of their diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol problems to prevent future events.
